Do you vacuum well? It might not matter. Dangerous area include where the carpet meets the wall or furniture. These areas may go untouched by a vacuum cleaner for months, while mold and dust accumulate. Get rid of your carpet and allergies may just disappear.
Keep the Carpet clean and Allergies Will Disappear
As I said, the best way to deal with the relationship between your carpet and allergies is to just get rid of the carpet. If that is not possible, then keep it very clean. A quick search on the Internet can provide vast resources for carpet cleaning. It is essential that you give your entire carpet a thorough shampoo at least once a year, and high traffic areas require greater attention. Family members who suffer from allergies need the carpet in their rooms cleaned at a much greater frequency. Vacuuming alone is not sufficient, but you can find numerous products online that can help with your carpet and allergies.
Are New Carpet and Allergies Enemies, Too?
A new carpet is not the answer to your allergy problems. Obviously, over time the new carpet will collect mold, dust and allergens. But, what you may not know is this: many people notice allergy-like symptoms, like headache, coughing, and skin rash, when exposed to newly installed carpet. These symptoms can usually be attributed to 4-phenylcyclohexene (4-PC), a chemical in new carpets that is responsible for that “new carpet smell”. To avoid any adverse reactions to this chemical, it is advisable to unroll the carpet and let it air out a few days before installation, and to keep the areas where the new carpet is installed well ventilated. The smell should dissipate in a few days.
You don’t have to let carpet and allergies make your life difficult. Having allergies, you probably have already accepted the fact that you have to take extra precautions in life. Something you’ll have to get used to if you already haven’t is to clean your carpet more often and more carefully.
